AT KALGOORLIE.
The residents of Kalgoorlie and dis-
trict, reinforced by many thousands of
visitors from outside centres, made
Commonwealth and New Year's Day
a real high holiday in this town. Fine
weather, though perhaps a little warm
for some folks, favored festive gather-
ings, and old and young had abundant
inducement to go from their homes to
join their fellow beings in vast assem-
blages for celebration and enjoyment.
Kalgoorlie was arrayed in festive finery
and glitter as never before, the pre-
dominant note being Australian na-
tional as well as Imperial unity. Some
of the devices employed in, the decora-
tion of places of business (strictly closed
for the day) and dwelling houses be-
tokened much ingenuity, and the
evinced general standard of artistic
taste. left room for only congratulatory
comment. One Hannan-street firm
had the front of its premises adorned
with six separate representations
of the now united colonies,
representing their divided con-
ditions in 1900, and these were
surmounted by a great picture of fed-
erated Australia in 1901, bare of any
territorial divisional lines. The whole
had been admirably worked out by the
painter. Other establishments boasted
of quite elaborate adornments in bunt-
ing, foliage, etc. Flags were flying
everywhere, and from the highest flag-
staff in the town — that of the post office
buildings — there proudly fluttered a
big Union Jack.
