Description
-
Grace Bussell lived with her parents in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. In 1876, at the age of 16 she rode her horse down a cliff into the dangerous surf off Redgate Beach, to rescue passengers and crew on board the swamped steamship SS Georgette. Her family's stockman Sam Isaacs was also involved in the rescue. Due to her courage, she became known as "The Grace Darling of the West" and was awarded a silver medal and certificate by the Royal Humane Society, a British charity founded in 1774, promoting lifesaving intervention
