PICNIC TIME FOR
TEDDY BEARS
Note: The different sizes of these bears
are obtained by using the wools and
needles recommended below.
Materials:
1st Size (18in, high): 6 balls main color
(A), oddment of black (B) Emu Pretty-
1 quick; 1 pair No. 3 knitting needles.
2nd Size (14in. high): 2 balls main color
(A), oddment of black (B) Emu Magnum;
1 pair No. 6 knitting needles.
3rd Size (12in. high): 2 balls main color
(A), oddment of black (B) Emu Scotch
Double Knitting, Bri-Nylon Double Knit-
ting, Double Crepe, or Sports; 1 pair No.
8 knitting needles.
4th Size (11in. high): 2 balls main color
(A), oddment of black (B) Emu Scotch
4-ply or Bri-Nylon 4-ply; 1 pair No. 10
knitting needles.
Kapok for stuffing; a pair of eyes or
two boot buttons; ribbon for neck.
Abbreviations: M 1, make one by pick-
ing up the bar that lies between the st.
just worked and the next st. on left-hand
needle and knitting into the back of it;
main color, A; black, B.
HEAD
Using A, cast on 4 sts.
1st Row: Inc. in first st, k to end.
2nd Row: Cast on 4 sts, p to end, inc.
in last st.
Rep. last 2 rows once more. (16 sts.)
Next Row: Cast on 3 sts, k to end.
Next Row: P to end, inc. in last st. (20
sts.)
Next Row: Knit.
Rep. last 2 rows once more. (21 sts.)
Work 2 rows straight. Dec. 1 st. at
end of next and following alternate row.

Dec. 1 st. at beg. of next row and at
this same edge on next 4 rows. (14 sts.)

LEGS (2)

Using A, cast on 28 sts. and work 2 rows
in st-st, starting with a k row.

Dec. 1 st. each end of next and every
following alternate row until 18 sts. re-
main. Next Row: P 2 tog., p to last 2
sts., p 2 tog. Work 2 rows straight.

Inc. 1 st. each end of next and every
following 6th row until 22 sts. on needle.

Work 3 rows straight. Cast off.

OUTER EARS (Make 2)

Using A, cast on 10 sts. and work 7
rows in st-st., starting with k row. Dec. 1
st. each end of next 3 rows. Cast off.

INNER EARS (2)

Work as for outer ears, but using B.

PADS (2)

Using B, cast on 8 sts. and work 5 rows
st-st., starting with k row.

Dec. 1 st. each, end of next and every
alternate row until 2 sts. remain. Cast off.

SOLES (2)

Using B, cast on 4 sts. and work 2 rows
st-st., starting with k row.

Inc. 1 st. each end of next and every
following alternate row until 8 sts. on

needle. Work 4 rows straight. Dec. 1 it
each end of next and following alternate
row. (4 its.) Work 1 row. Cast off.

TO MAKE UP

Place pointed edge of gusset to point of
nose, join gusset round head to cast-on
edge of head. Join other side to match.
Join seam from nose to cast-on edge.
Turn on to right side and stuff firmly.
Join side, shoulder, and crutch seams of
body. Join leg and arm seams. Sew soles
to feet and pads to arms. Join legs to
body with leg seam to centre front. Turn
on to right side, stuff legs and lower half
of body firmly. Turn arms on to right
side. Join arms to body with arm seam
matching side seam of body. Stuff top
half of body and arms. Join head to body
adding extra stuffing to neck. Join inner
ear to outer ear and attach to head on
gusset seam, slightly folded to front at
illustrated. Sew on eye buttons and em-
broider nose and mouth as illustrated
