Here is a lovable Teddy Bear cake
to delight a birthday child. If you
already have our "Children's
Birthday Cake Book", cut this out and
paste it in. Approximate cost: $3.80.
2 packets butter cake mix
2 x 100g packets Smarties or other
round coloured sweets
thin licorice
tubular licorice, ribbon
VIENNA CREAM
125g (4oz) butter
1½ cups icing sugar
2 tablespoons milk
brown food colouring
VIENNA CREAM
Place softened butter in small bowl of
electric mixer, beat until creamy, grad-
ually add sifted icing sugar alternately
with the milk. Continue beating until
mixture is smooth. Gradually add few
drops of colouring, beat well after each
addition.

1 Make up cake mixtures according to
directions on packet, pour into two
greased 18cm x 28cm (7in x 11in)
lamington tins, bake in moderate oven 30
minutes or until cakes are cooked when
tested. Turn out on to wire racks to cool.
Place cakes side by side, trim long
sides so that the two cakes fit tightly
together. Draw a paper pattern using the
picture as a guide, cut out pattern. Pin
paper pattern on top of cake, as shown.
With a small sharp knife, cut out cake
using pattern as a guide.

2 Remove paper pattern from cake,
assemble cake pieces on board to
make up bear. Cover entire cake with
brown-coloured Vienna Cream. Arrange
Smarties on top of bear to form pants
and braces, use thin licorice to define
arms, legs and facial features of bear.
Place two black sweets in centre of eyes
to form eyeballs and a red one to form
mouth. Split tubular licorice lengthwise,
press out flat; cut nose and position, as
shown. Tie red ribbon into a neat bow,
secure to neck with a toothpick.
