Picnics

Five hungry ants marching in a line, came upon a picnic where they could dine…

Although originating in France in the late 1500s, picnics became popular in England after 1800 with the idea being that it was a social event where each guest provided a share of the food. Later this became an outdoor excursion to a place in the country where friends could meet and share food and drink.

Picnics can often be a big day out to somewhere scenic like the bush, the river or a park. They involve the eating of finger food and fruit, special hampers and rugs plus the unwanted attention of ants and flies. Games and sports are commonplace, and a lot of lazing in the sunshine.
